Otitis externa, or swimmer's ear, is an infection that affects that outer ear and ear canal. It is usually caused when the ear has been exposed to too much moisture. The infection occurs when water collects in the ear, causing the ear to become damp. Ear pain may be a sign of otitis externa.

Normally cats are very resistant to ear infections. Therefore, if a cat develops otitis externa, and especially if it recurs, it is necessary to look for an underlying cause such as an ear mite infestation, an unusual shape of the ear canal, or a disease affecting the cat's immune system.
